Week#3:Ch2


Strategy 2:“Set a personal example with visible, memorable symbols and behaviors.”

Before I read this chapter, symbolic of leadership seems a tip to do make things exaggerate or faint without an evidence. So symbolism were used make people believe in something without reasoning I thought. However, though reading this book I realize that symbolic sometimes has a great impact on people more than just explaining things tightly. And if there are strong evidence or actions with symbolism, it can be a medium to convince people more. For example Shackleton’s story, he threw golden sovereign and a gold cigaratte case into snow when he tell that dispensable items should be abandon for a succesful process by sledge.Though this action he could send his strong massage to followers.

I personally think since power of symbolism is great, a leader who wants to use this tactic need to be aware of not only his/herself but also all conditions around. In addition, they should not use this tactics in order to instantly get though the situation because if the vivid symbolic are dynamic, expectation by people will be enhanced and the leader have to response to that. They need to figure out what the outcome is after taking action.

 
I also did not have good image of “Be Visible: Let People See You Leading” somehow because it sounds showing off their effort to people. However, this book suggest to be visible because a presence of leader can give courage and inspiration to people especially in dangerous and stressful situation.

I leant using symbolism is effective although that require sensibility and strong awareness of situation.



Nelson Mandela used to say "Amandla" which means power to the people with punching the air.
I think it is kind symbolising his belief and empowering people.
